Considerations from Daniel: Part 1

           January 2, 2013 , back to the ol’ routine. Yippee-skippy! Seriously! My sweet husband and I are truly blessed in that we both actually enjoy our work! His work is managing timberland; my work is teaching and writing lessons assigned to me by the Lord. One assignment for these wintry, January days is preparing the spring semester Women’s Bible Study: Daniel, Resolve and Hope.

            Today’s consideration:

Mighty King Nebuchadnezzar once ruled over Babylon – an ancient, dark land infused with depravity and tarnished by strange gods.  In 605 B.C., the formidable Babylonian army besieged Jerusalem and forcibly carted off handpicked, royal young men who were good-looking, and endowed with wisdom, intelligence, and discerning knowledge.

The teens were then indoctrinated into that pagan culture through a three-year curriculum at “Babylon University”. But, among the captives, a lad named Daniel, in spite of grim circumstances, “made up his mind that he would not defile himself ”(Dan. 1:8a). Daniel never returned home to Jerusalem. Into old age, the prophet remained faithful to his God and served as a tool in God’s hands within the governments of four Gentile kings in that foreign country.

The perilous episodes and astounding prophecies recorded in the book of Daniel clearly announce that there is a God in heaven, He is in control, and there is no limit to what He can do through a life fully devoted to Him!

Mere Snowmen

Frosty the snowman knew
The sun was hot that day,

So he said, “Let’s run and

We’ll have some fun

Now before I melt away.” ¹

We are but mere "snowmen", handcrafted for a season...

and melting into eternity.

Christmas Dinner 2012

            After battling much opposition from me, my brilliant husband totally took charge of this year's family Christmas dinner for fifteen. From planning every detail, shopping for the groceries, preparing the table, cooking the meal, and even cleaning up afterwards, he did it ALL! (YES, he's spoken for, girls, and you can't have him!)

The menu:  hotdogs and som’mores over a bon fire

The setting:  Chancellor Ferry Tree Farm on the Coosa River

            Our meal may have been missing the traditional dressing and cranberry sauce but all the essential ingredients in a family Christmas dinner were found: family, fun, laughter, and love.

            Thank you, Superman! Happy Birthday, Jesus!

A Place in Time

            Yesterday, at our tree farm, Phillip and I worked throughout the afternoon clearing the impenetrable thicket of saw briars and river cane growing along the Coosa River. As evening fell over the riverbank, a silver half-moon rose in the eastern sky, just as the sun dropped behind the western horizon, leaving a blazing gold, pink, and purple trail. An intricately crocheted silhouette of oak branches above us painted a black-lace web over the canvas of the dimming sky; while the uncharacteristically warm December dusk set the stage for a bullfrog symphony to croak a moonlight sonata on the banks of the island across the water.

From the 1860s to the 1930s, just down river from our property boundary line, the Old Chancellor Ferry once ran as the only means of navigation across the Coosa in that region. It’s told that our 25^th president, William McKinley who led our nation to victory in the Spanish-American War, once road that ferryboat while canvassing Alabama.

Dr. Luke wrote in Acts 17:26 that God “made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation.”  I’m thankful to God for placing me in Alabama, in the 21^st Century, as a helpmate to Phillip Glassco (his “ana duo” or companion in the work of the gospel) to accomplish God’s purposes in our own generation.

O Lord, please give us the strength and resolve to fight the good fight, keep the faith, and finish the course well in this place and time. In Jesus' name. Amen.
