The Schoolhouse
No teacher had completed a full term at that one-room,
eight-grade schoolhouse in over four years. Neither the warnings of unruly
students and an “unbalanced” boy’s attacks on the school nor reports of a
dangerous “bewitched” woman deter young Elsie from accepting the challenge
to teach at Shady Grove School tucked deep in the woods on Whitwell Mountain.
Elsie boards a train destined for a coal mining community near
her school. The click-clack-click of the wheels along the rails and rhythmic
sway of the coach help to calm her nervousness, and imaginations of adventures to come play across her mind as she looks out on the fertile
valley. No
imaginations, however, can prepare her for the fierce trials the new
teacher will soon face. When determination grows weak, she turns to God again
and again for the courage, wisdom, and resolve needed to finish her term at The Schoolhouse.
The author invites you to not just read this story but to apply it to your life by means of thought-provoking “Reflections” at the end of each chapter. These pages take you to Scripture verses related to the chapter’s theme and offer valuable personal application of Biblical truths.
