As a preschooler, our Rebecca's ambition? - to sell apples with a few bananas on the side. Today? No, she doesn't run a fruit stand, but she did earn a bachelor degree at Liberty University in health promotions; and as a stay-at-home mom of three, she slices apples every day. Smile.

In Romans 15:20, the apostle Paul said, "My ambition has always been to preach the Good News where the name of Christ has never been heard...."

Beloved, what are your ambitions? Are your goals for Jesus or yourself?

I recently asked Jesus what encourages Him. I believe He clearly answered in Philemon 1:7 - God is encouraged when we love and encourage others.

Today, beloved, encourage Lord Jesus! Love and encourage the people in your pathway whether or not they merit it.

In A Movable Feast, Ernest Hemingway wrote: "You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen."

Fall isn't sad to me. It's nostalgic - a sentimental, wistful affection for happy childhood autumn days atop Lookout Mountain in Fort Payne, Alabama. That's why not one of my storybooks closes before harvest gold and pumpkin orange paint over summertime's green canvas.

My Phillip says that man measures time in days and years; God's calendar, however, is marked in moments and seasons. Beloved, if we look carefully, we'll find His goodness stamped in everyone.

Who's in Charge?

"Praise the name of God forever and ever, for He has all wisdom and power. He controls the course of world events; He removes kings and sets up other kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars." (Daniel 2:20-21 NLT)


Yesterday, I heard a presidential election discussion on talk-show radio basing outcome predictions on statistics and past voting patterns. The host and guests, however, failed to figure in the key factor: the sovereignty of God.

Daniel chapter one records that in the third year of King Johoiakim's reign in Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon besieged Jerusalem. Because the Babylonians were so powerful? No, because the LORD gave King Nebuchadnezzar victory over King Johoiakim.

So, if God is sovereign, should we pray about the presidential election? YES! Without ceasing, for God hears the cries of His people. Should we vote? Absolutely! God accomplishes His good purposes through His vessels of honor.

Beloved, pray! Vote! Trust Jesus, the sovereign King of kings!

"Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts." (Zechariah 4:6)

Friday night, my five-year-old nephew overheard me say, "You know God said, 'I have a good plan for you to give you a future and a hope.'" Amazed, his big ole brown eyes got even bigger, and he exclaimed, "How did you know that?"

It's pretty astonishing, isn't it, that ordinary people like us can know unquestionably what the Most High, Almighty God said. It's all recorded in His book - the Holy Bible.

A Little "Peace" of Heaven

Jesus said, "I am leaving you a gift - peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid." (John 14:27 NLT)



As teenagers, hours of superman's and my dating time were enjoyed at Weiss Lake on the Coosa River with Phillip's family. Going to his sister and brother-in-law's lake cabin meant good times and free food, boating, and skiing.

And now, as grandparents, hours of superman's and my get-away time are enjoyed on that same Coosa River about a hundred miles down stream, and our kids and grands get the free food, boating, and skiing. (smile) My daddy used to say, "The river to Phillip is just a little piece of heaven on earth."

In John chapter 14, Jesus promised His followers a little "peace" of heaven on earth. His promise: Although He would soon return to heaven, one day He undoubtedly will return!

Need peace, beloved? Rest in the promises of God!

Great Benefit Package

"Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you." (Psalm 91:7 NLT)


I asked the Lord what He'd like to tell the world today and then came across a rather obscure story tucked in the Old Testament inside the book of Jeremiah.

In Jeremiah chapter 39,  the mighty armies of Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon besieged Jerusalem and slaughtered all the nobles of Judah. The powerful king ordered the captain of the guard, however, to find the prophet Jeremiah. "See that he isn't hurt," he said. "Look after him well, and give him anything he wants."

Say what????

Come to find out, the LORD had given a message to Jeremiah the prophet while he was in prison. This is what the LORD of Heaven's Armies had said, "I will do to this city everything I have threatened. I will send disaster not prosperity. You will see its destruction, but I will rescue you from those you fear so much. Because you trusted me, I will give you your life as a reward. I will rescue you and keep you safe." Ole Jeremiah learned first hand that trusting God comes with a great benefit package.

O people of the world, trust Jesus! He comes with a great benefit package. "If God be for us, who can ever be against us?" (Romans 8:31)

"You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You." (Isa. 26:3)

"He will not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD." (Psalm 112:7)

"When ever I am afraid, I will trust in You." (Psalm 56:3)

Obedience Trumps Feelings

"Today I have given you a choice between life and death, between blessings and curses...Oh that you would choose life...by loving the LORD your God, obeying Him, and committing yourself firmly to Him. This is the key to your life." (Debut. 30:19-20a  NLT)


When our kids were growing up, we told them,  "You don't have to understand, you don't have to agree, but you do have to obey; and there are consequences for intentional disobedience."

The same is true with God, our heavenly Father. We may not completely understand the why of His instructions or feel like doing them; but for life to work, we have to do it God's way. If we refuse, the consequences are dire. Bottomline: obedience trumps feelings every time.

Got troubles? Obey God. Follow feelings; get disaster!

Left Behind

"When they couldn't find Him, they went back to Jerusalem to search for Him there." (Luke 2:45 NLT)



Kevin McCallister in the 1990 American family comedy Home Alone wasn't the first kid to get left behind. In the New Testament, Dr. Luke tells the story of twelve-year-old Jesus and his parents caravanning to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. When the convoy left the holy city, unbeknownst to Mary and Joseph, their boy stayed behind. After a day's journey, the couple realized that Jesus was missing and promptly returned to Jerusalem.

Tonight, I'm teaching a Bible lesson I prepared 15 years ago. A real danger of doing a God-job over and over for years and years is slipping into self-reliance and one day waking up on a desert road realizing, "Hey, Jesus is missing. Where'd He go?"

O pilgrim, have you left Jesus behind? Turn around, retrace your steps, and hurry back to Him! "For apart from Jesus we can do nothing!" (John 15:5b)

Step Out of Traffic

Over the weekend, a nasty cold stopped me in my tracks, so I tossed the "to-do" list to the wind. I took a two hour nap on my back porch, watched "17 Miracles" (the Willie Handcart Company's 1856 perilous trek to Salt Lake City movie), read David Wilkerson's classic The Cross and the Switchblade, Oswald Chambers' If You Will Ask, Reflections on the Power of Prayer, and in the stillness, reconnected with my God - Father, Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit.

Beloved, are you overextended, burning the candle at both ends, spread thinner than a penny on a freight train track? Be still, cease striving, step out of the traffic, and soak in the revitalizing Presence of God.

Promises, Promises

"Now may the God of peace - who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep...may He equip you with all you need for doing His will..." (Heb. 13:20-21a NLT)



Twenty-four hours prior to yesterday's book reading, I started getting a cold. Even though the star of Mr. Greenleaf's Unforgettable Summer is a little, green tree frog, I didn't want to sound like one. So I prayed (and sweet friends prayed), "Lord, I believe these book readings are Your will, and You promised to equip us with all we need for doing Your will. Lord, I need a clear voice this afternoon. Help please!" And thanks to Jesus, I didn't cough, sneeze, or croak one time during the Mt. Laurel Library visit.

When the Almighty informed Moses that He was sending him to Pharaoh to bring His people out of captivity in Egypt, Moses argued, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel, out of Egypt? I have never been eloquent, for I am slow of speech and tongue."  And the LORD God replied, "Who has made man's mouth? Is it not I the LORD? Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say."

Beloved, be encouraged. Whatever assignment God marks out before you, He will supply every good thing needed to accomplish it. For "faithful is He who call you, and He also will bring it to pass." (1 Thess. 5:24 NASB)

Teamwork

When I gave a baby shower for my daughter-in-law a couple of weeks ago, my superman, son Dan, daughter Rebecca, three grands, and sweet friend Dawn all rallied to help me decorate and prepare refreshments; and lickety-split, the job was done.

After Jesus' return to heaven, a team of eleven men rocked the whole world for Christ. Two thousand years later, aftershocks continue to rumble.

Tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 15th) at 4:00 P.M., Mt. Laurel Library is hosting a book reading/signing for Mr. Greenleaf, Dawn, and me. I've learned from past experiences that book signings are often lonely.

Years ago, Dr. Tony Campolo told the story of taking his family along on a speaking engagement. When they pulled into the parking lot of the church, it was empty. From the back seat, his little boy said, "Dad, nobody's here!" Campolo then heard his daughter whisper, "Shhhhhh!!! It's hard to be famous when nobody knows who you are!"

Are you working hard but rewarded little? Fret not, beloved. When you work for Jesus, His treasures await you in heaven.

There's Hope For America

Recreate Women's Conference 2015




"Abraham approached [the Lord] and said, 'Will you sweep away both the righteous and the wicked? Suppose You find 50 righteous people living there in the city - will You still sweep it away and not spare it for their sakes? Surely You wouldn't do such a thing, destroying the righteous along with the wicked'...And the Lord replied, 'If I find 50 righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake.'" (Gen. 18:23-26 NLT)




You probably heard the story in Sunday school...

The noonday sun over an oak grove in Hebron felt hotter than sizzlin' grease in a frying pan, and Ole Abraham sat in the doorway of his tent mopping sweat from his brow. You can imagine his surprise when he looked up and spotted three men standing nearby.

"My Lord," he said, "Come sit for a spell and rest in the shade. Since You've honored Your servant with a visit, I'll get the wife to wash Your feet and cook some mighty fine vitals."

Abraham knew right off that once again he was in the presence of the LORD God Almighty Himself along with two of His strong angels. 

Well, the celestial guests had good news and bad news. The good news - by the time they returned the next year, Abraham and Sarah would have a son! The bad news - because the flagrant, heinous, glaring sin of Sodom and Gomorrah had raised a stench all the way to high heaven, the visitors had come to check it out and annihilate the evil cities. 

Abraham commenced to hagglin' on behalf of his nephew Lot's hometown, and the Lord in His mercy agreed to spare the cities if 10 righteous men were found. They weren't. The angels delivered Lot's family and fire and brimstone rained down on wicked Sodom and Gomorrah. 

Last week, in one tiny corner of the increasingly sinful USA, around 7,000 women gathered at the Recreate Women's Conference to praise and worship Jesus, the Almighty God and Lord of Lords. 

Beloved, there's hope for America. Keep praying. Keep clinging to  Jesus.

Run to Win

"I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings.  Don't you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win...run with purpose in every step!" (1 Cor. 9:23-26a NLT)



On Saturday, our Rebecca and friend, Maggie, ran the 5K Great Pumpkin Run. Out of 873 male and female athletes, my competitive, mom-of-three girl crossed the finish line #54! Woo-hoo! You go girl!

In this dog eat dog world, people compete for highest salary, biggest house, top of the corporate ladder, but the Apostle Paul urged the Corinthians to run God's race - sprint to take the Good News of Jesus to lost and hopeless people. 

At the end of his earthly days, Paul penned, "As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And not the prize awaits me - the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of His return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to His appearing." (2 Tim. 4:6-8)

Beloved, whose race are you running? Run for God. Run to win!

Brave

From the perilous trenches along the war-torn Western Front in World War I, chaplain Studdert Kennedy penned:



We have failed, in fact, to put first things first. The first thing, by far the first, that every Christian mother should learn to pray for her son, and every Christian wife for her husband, is that by him and through him, at whatever cost, God’s will may be done. We must learn to leave the matter of life and death entirely in God’s hands, and pray that in life or death our men may keep their manhood clean from every spot of cowardice or sin.

Especially must we teach our children this. The first prayer I want my son to learn to say for me is not “God make daddy safe,” but “God make daddy brave, and if he has hard things to do make him strong to do them.” Life and death don’t matter, Pat, my son; right and wrong do. Daddy dead is daddy still, but daddy dishonored before God is something awful, too bad for words. I suppose you’d like to put in a bit about safety, old chap, and mother would. Well, put it in, but afterwards, always afterwards, because it does not really matter near so much. Every man, woman, and child should be taught to put first things first in prayer, both peace and war, and that I believe is where we have failed.1


One finds across Holy Scripture trenches, God's loyal men with bravery coursing through their veins. At the threat of Nebuchadnezzar's fiery furnace, three Hebrew boys refused to bow before the King's image and declared, "If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, your majesty. But even if He doesn't, we want to make it clear to you, your majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up." (Dan. 3:17-18)

In Hebrews Faith Hall of Fame: God's men "were tortured, refusing to turn from God in order to be set free. They placed their hope in a better life after the resurrection. Some were jeered at, and their backs were cut open with whips. Others were chained in prisons. Some died by stoning, some were sawed in half, and others were killed with the sword. Some went about wearing skins of sheep and goats, destitute and oppressed and mistreated. They were too good for this world, wandering over deserts and mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground. All these people earned a good reputation because of their faith, yet none of them received [on earth] all that God has promised." (Heb. 11:35b-39)

And the bravest of all, mere hours before crucifixion fell on His face in the Garden of Gethsemane and prayed, "My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from Me. Yet I want Your will to be done, not Mine." (Matt. 26:39)


God make us brave! When we have hard things to do, make us strong to do them; and at whatever cost, may Your will be done. In Jesus'  brave name. Amen.

Hunger Games

Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with [salty truth], so that you will know how you should respond to each person." (Col. 4:2-6 NASB)



Because of a growing longing to stop feeding the full,  I entered the hunger games last summer - searching for spiritually hungry people to love, teach, and disciple. This fall, the Lord gathered a small group of seven precious young women eager to know God and His Word.

O Christian, join the hunger games. Find starving souls and  feed them with ample portions of savory love and God's truth.

My Anchor Holds

It leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary. Jesus has already gone in there before us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek." (Hebrews 6:18-20 NLT)




Someone I dearly love is caught in a fierce life storm. When I texted, "I love you and am praying for you." He replied, "My anchor holds."

O beloved, is typhoon trouble raging against you? Cling to Jesus, the Anchor that holds in spite of the storm.

"O afflicted one, storm-tossed, and not comforted. Behold, I will set your stones in antimony, and your foundations I will lay in sapphires...No weapon formed against you will prosper; and every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD..." (Isa. 54:11,17 NASB)

Family Fun on the Farm

What a grand weekend with our kids and grands! One highlight for me was sitting on the dock talking with my granddaughter.

In our technical, hurry-scurry, texting, tweeting, Instagramming, FaceBooking world, sittin' and just talkin' are hugely neglected and face-to-face, heartfelt fellowship is rare.

Beloved, sit down! Just talk. It's good for souls.

Humble Thyself

"Humble yourself therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time." (1 Peter 5:6)



In an art class at Tusculum College, our Ben was given a lump of clay and instructed, "Make something." For encouragement, I sent him Isaiah 64:8: "And yet, O LORD, You are our Father. We are the clay, and You are the potter. We all are formed by Your hand." Through that Scripture, God inspired Ben's breathtaking sculpture: "Potter and the Clay." 

Isaiah 65:1-3 reads, "the LORD God says, 'I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help. I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me.' I said, 'Here I am, here I am!' to a nation that did not call on my name. All day long I opened My arms to a rebellious people. But they follow their own evil paths and their own crooked schemes. All day long they insult Me to my face..."

Have mercy on us, O God, and help us humble ourselves in Your holy hand. Beloved, how are you responding to Father God's outstretched arms?
