Courageous

Our little buddy fishing at the
Coosa River family farm

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)

Last weekend, friends from Nebraska visited our Coosa River farm. Their normally reserved, little five-year-old road the 4-wheeler, jumped off the dock into the river, and even ate "pigs-in-a-blanket" (hot dogs wrapped in cheese). Was it the southern, country air that brought out his "courageous"? Naw - it was his fun-loving Uncle Ben that was with him everywhere he went.

Be courageous, Christian! Lord Jesus will never leaves you nor forsakes you. He's with you everywhere you go.

My adorable babygrand

"Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged..." (Prov. 17:6)

My sweet daughter-in-law returned to work this week, so I'm enjoying "baby duty" until daycare begins next Monday.

Precious moments.

Got kids? Got grandkids? Got parents or grandparents? Treasure the times spent TOGETHER.

"There's nothing sweeter than a newborn baby against his grandmother's cheek." ~ Beth Moore

My granddog, Gabe, and our Dan

"Then God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." (Gen. 1:26)

"In the water" isn't one of our granddog, Gabe's, favorite places to be. But wherever his Dan goes, he longs to follow.

Oh, that we would follow our Jesus, our Shepherd, with equal devotion and unwavering loyalty.

Childlike

L-R  my niece, Virginia, my Ben, and my Rebecca, 1986

"Let us purpose to stay simple, trusting, and childlike in total dependence upon God for all our days." ~ Pastor Larry Stockstill

Years ago, my dear mother quietly slipped behind a wire fence, snapped this shot of her grandchildren on the other side, and captured the essence of "childlike" - loving, sweet, and inquisitive.

The Bible tells us that Jesus called a little child to His side and set him on his feet in the middle of the crowd. "Believe Me," He said, "unless you change your whole outlook and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven. It is the man who can be as humble as a little child who is greatest in the kingdom of Heaven." (Matt. 18:2-4, J. B. Phillips New Testament)

O Christian,  are you childlike in faith today - trusting Jesus over all you see and feel?

My mama, 1940s
Yosemite National Park

"An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels... She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain. but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised." (Prov. 31:1,26,30)

"Wings are to a bird, and sails to a ship, so is prayer to the soul."
~ Corrie Ten Boom

"They come and go so quickly
Spring and Fall...
as if they had not really
come at all.
Perhaps
we could not take
too much of beauty,
breath-catching glory,
ecstasy without relief;
and so...
God made them
brief."
~ Ruth Bell Graham

"Keep reading the Bible and don't worry about understanding everything. Eventually, it will go right past your mind and into your spirit." ~ Evelyn Baskin

"If there were more study of Genesis instead of so much argument about it, its truth would be clearer." ~ Dr. Henrietta C. Mears

"Life comes in seasons, and some seasons are awful hard. Ain't nothing you kin do 'bout that, but yer attitude in the midst of the pain is yer choice. The secret is to stay saddled up close to Jesus ever'day.  Talk to Him and listen to what He's got to say by stayin' under His word and goin' to His church. Then, even when ya got troubles, them troubles ain't got you." ~ Nonie Baskin of Hoot Owl Hollow

"Things will look better in the morning - they always do."
~ Verna B. Watson, my mother

"Let the hope of heaven empower you to live well in this broken world that is passing away... If this world were all there is, it would be tragic beyond description." ~ Sarah Young

"Behold, the bondservant of the Lord; may it be done to me according to Your word." ~ Mary, mother of Jesus

O Christian, "Know that wisdom is like honey for you; if you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off!" (Prov. 24:14)

"Sing to Me," says the Lord.

My Rebecca and my daddy - "Pawpaw", 1982
"... Sing songs from your heart to Christ. Sing praises over everything, any excuse for a song to God the Father in the name of our Master, Jesus Christ." (Eph. 5:19-20, The Message)

When we visited my sweet daddy across his last weeks on this old earth, he'd say, "Rebecca, sing me a song," and my Rebecca would sing and sing and sing, much to her grandfather's delight.

In Ephesians chapter five, the heavenly Father beckons His children to sing Him a song of thanksgiving and praise. O children of God, delight Your Father - sing to the Lord today! It's good for the heart - His and yours.

"I heard a company of angels around the Throne, the animals, the elders - ten thousand times ten thousand their number, thousand after thousand in full song: The slain Lamb is worthy! Take the power, the wealth, the wisdom, the strength! Take the honor, glory, the blessing [O Lord]!" (Rev. 5:11-12, The Message)

A Painless New World

Our sweet babygrand

"They shall be His people and God Himself will be with them, and wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death shall be no more and never again shall there be sorrow or crying or pain. For all those former things are past and gone." (Rev. 21:4, J. B. Phillips New Testament)

Our precious babygrand turned two months old yesterday, and today, bless his little heart, he got his first round of vaccinations. His sweet mommy or I would have gladly taken those shots for him to spare the little guy such pain and discomfort.

In John 16:33, Jesus said that in this world we will have tribulation, but to be of good cheer because He has overcome the world. The Bible tells us that one day God will make a new heaven and and new earth where there is no longer any pain or sorry or suffering or death - zero, zilch, none whatsoever for those belonging to Him through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.

Dear Christian, because Jesus suffered and died in our place, pain is temporary. In our eternity, all is well.

"The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen." (2 Tim. 4:18)

Mr. Greenleaf and his home

"Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family." (Prov. 18:24, The Message)

Our first meeting was quite the calamity.

Early summer, not knowing that my watering pot was Mr. Greenleaf's home, I carried it to my laundry room and was filling it with water, when out hopped Mr. Greenleaf and out popped my shriek. The shrill noise was quite disconcerting to the little fellow who jumped about the sink desperately trying to find a hiding place from this hysterical she-human. When my squeals calmed to chuckles, he felt it safe to leap back to his pot - where I then carted tree-frog and lodging outside to the porch.

These days, my green friend truly sticks closer by than most family, and neither Mr. Greenleaf nor I will be surprised if one day a storybook grows from our amusing adventures together. You may be thinking, Jill, and the moral of this story is?

Beware of first impressions. Let not the looks determine your likes.

"... for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (1 Sam. 16:7)

my Dan's preschool graduation
(First Baptist Church, Pine Bluff, AR, 1991)
"... You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm." (Jonah 4:2)

In Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the kind and gentle Dr. Horace Green was our children's pediatrician. My little Dan once said, "I wike Dr. Dween. He doctors soft."

Are you ailing today in body, soul, or spirit? Come to the kind and gentle Great Physician, Jesus Christ. He doctors soft!

Jesus said, "Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. All of you, take up My yoke and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourselves." (Matt. 11:28-29)

Staying Connected

>> Wednesday, July 16, 2014

my oldest grandson, 2006
(Do you see the family resemblance between him and my Ben at age two posted yesterday?)

"May the Lord watch between you and me when we are absent one from the other." (Gen. 31:49)

Back home from their two week vacation in Alabama, my daughter asked her kids, "What do you miss most?" Our oldest grandson answered, "Family!" and then burst into tears.

Because we live 500 miles apart, Rebecca initiated a build-a-story game a few years ago to help us stay connected. My second storybook, Secrets of Shiloh, actually grew from that unfinished narrative.

Who are you missing today? Ask the Lord for creative ways to stay connected.

"So let's do it... Let's see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day [of Christ's return] approaching." (Heb.  10:24-25, The Message)

Is 'em Here Yet?

My Rebecca and Ben, summer of 1985
Smoky Mountain vacation

"Bless the Lord, you His angels, mighty in strength, who perform His word, obeying the voice of His word! Bless the Lord, all you His hosts, you His servants who do His will." (Psalm 103:20-21)

One of the many mistakes I made as a young parent was giving my preschoolers instructions about the home smoke detector right before bedtime. WRONG!
Rebecca immediately began to cry - fearful that the house would catch on fire that very night. In an attempt to console her, I closed my eyes and prayed, "Lord Jesus, please send Your angels to guard our home and keep us safe. Amen."
When I opened my eyes, little Ben's eyes were now as big as saucers. He lay perfectly still, not moving a muscle. Finally he whispered, "Is 'em here yet?"

Do you believe in angels? The Bible says they're so -

"The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him and rescues them." (Psalm 34:7)

"For the Lord will give His angels charge over you, to guard you in all your ways." (Psalm 91:11)

"Are (angels) not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?" (Heb. 1:14)

"Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it." (Heb. 13:2)

NEVER, EVER worship angels, but ALWAYS, FOREVER worship Almighty God who created them to help take care of us!

In Search of Lady Wisdom

Verna B. Waston, April 21, l920 - June 20, 2003
my mother - one of the wisest ladies I've ever known.

"You're blessed when you meet Lady Wisdom, when you make friends with Madame Insight. She's worth far more than money in the bank; her friendship is better than a big salary." (Prov. 3:13-14, The Message)

On Saturday, our summer small group semester ended with Serve Day. (Across the great state of Alabama, over 13,000 Church of the Highlands Members put Christ's love into action by
visiting nursing home residents, mowing lawns, building an elementary school playground, washing cars, making repairs at King's Ranch, and handing out free hot dogs and cold waters - just to name a few of the worthwhile projects. All praise and glory to the Lord Jesus Christ!)
In preparation for fall semester, I've embarked on a mission: in search of Lady Wisdom - hunting through God's Treasure Book to uncover buried riches. King Solomon beckoned gold diggers. "Sell everything and buy Wisdom! Forage for Understanding! Don't forget one word! Don't deviate one inch! Never walk away from Lady Wisdom - she guards your life; love her - she keeps her eye on you... She'll garland your life with grace, she'll festoon your days with beauty." (Prov. 4:4-9, The Message)

Need Lady Wisdom? Dig into the Ancient Book of Proverbs and discover life treasures more valuable than silver or gold.

O my Kia SOUL

"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name!" (Psalm 103:1)

Last week, I had to say goodbye to my dear, old friend "Sally" - my beloved, cobalt blue, Volkswagen Beetle.  L

However, because I needed a 4-door vehicle for ministry and grandmothering, I said hello to a brand spanking new, fire-engine red, Kia Soul. For her back windshield, I ordered a car sticker:
"Bless the Lord, O my SOUL" J
- a fitting phrase for a SOUL car and driver, since I desire everything within me and about me to bless God's holy name.
"For He has satisfied my thirsty soul, and my hungry soul He has filled with what is good." (Psalm 107:9)

O friend, bless the Lord today! Forget none of His benefits; who pardons all your iniquities, heals all your diseases, redeems your life from the pit, crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion, and satisfies your years with good things!

"Bless the Lord, all you works of His, in all places of His dominion; Bless the Lord, O my soul!" (Psalm 103:22)

Two of my boys

"Our boat may be tossed by the waves while He continues to sleep, but He will awake before it sinks." ~ Alexander MacLaren

Several of my dearest friends are currently in crises facing ferocious life storms - job losses, rebellious children, cancer, false accusations. In the gospel of Mark, a fierce gale sent waves crashing over the boat carrying Jesus and His disciples across the sea, yet Jesus slept on a cushion in the stern. His companions woke Him and cried, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?" And Jesus got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Hush, be still." And the wind died down, and it became calm - perfectly calm.

Are you caught in the whirlwind and waves of a stormy life? Sit back, relax, take a breath, and call to Jesus - the One who even the wind and the sea obey.

Excerpt from soon to be released Hoot Owl Hollow:

“Miss Nonie, may I tell you somethin’?” Andi said. “I don’t know what I’ve gotten myself into. I thought I was doin’ the right thing comin’ back to the mountains and workin’ in Bottle Knob, but now I’m not so sure. I don’t think I’ll ever live up to Dr. Park’s expectations. I made a mistake goin’ to Atlanta, and now I’m afraid I’ve messed up again. I wish I had your strength. You live way back here all alone and run a whole farm by yourself. And you don’t seem to be afraid of anything. What’s your secret?”

Nonie laughed and said, “Well, first uv all, it ain’t my strength, child; it’s the Lord’s strength in me. And second uv all, ‘tis the set of the sails, and not the gales, that tell us the way to go’.”
“That’s beautiful. Did you make that up?”
Nonie grinned. “Naw. Ella Wheeler Wilcox, an American author and poet, wrote them purdy words. Life comes in seasons, Andi, and some seasons are awful hard. Ain’t nothing’ you kin do ‘bout that, but yer attitude in the midst of the pain is yer choice. The secret is to stay saddled up close to Jesus ever’day. Talk to Him and listen to what He’s got to say by stayin’ under His word and goin’ to His church. Then, even when ya got troubles; them troubles ain’t got you. Have ya ever heared of a feller named Jehoshaphat?”
Andi shook her head and said, “No, ma’am.”
“Well, ya see, way back yonder, long time ago, thar wuz this here king of Judah named Jehoshaphat. One day he got some turrible news - not one, not two, but three fearsome armies wuz a comin’ against him. Well, that King Jehoshaphat, he commenced to shakin’ in his boots and wuz scareder than a long-tailed cat in a rocking chair factory, so he turned his attention to seek the Lord. Oh, how that king prayed, and he called all the menfolk, women, and young’uns throughout the whole land to pray, too. He howled like a coyot’ bayin’ at the moon. ‘O God, ain’t You the God of heaven? Ain’t You the One that done drove out our enemies before? O God, won’t You help us agin? Fer we’re plumb powerless against this swarm of varmints a comin’ to git us, and we don’t know what to do. But Lord, we’re a keepin’ our eyes on You.’ And ya know what the Lord did?”
 Wide-eyed, Andi said, “What?”
“Well, in those days, God talked to His kids through prophets. So the Lord told one of them prophets named Jahaziel, ‘You go tell ol’ Jehoshaphat not to be a fearin’, ‘cause the battle ain’t his; it’s Mine. Tell him to go on out thar tomorrow and jest watch Me whup them rebel rousers.”
“What happened?” Andi said.
“Well, the very next day, Jehoshaphat wuz a trustin’ the Lord somethin’ fierce, so he sent the music folks out in front of his fightin’ men. And whilst that choir wuz a singin’ praises to God, the Lord stirred thangs up between them three legions, and they commenced to a fightin’ each other. After the dust settled, not one of them rascals wuz left a standin’. So Jehoshaphat jest marched his folks right onto the battleground as purdy as you please and gathered up all the spoils. Andi, God ain’t changed. He’ll fight yer battles, too, when you trust Him and let Him do it.”
“Hmmm,” Andi said, “I never thought about it that way.”
