Keep Sowing

>> Thursday, April 30, 2015

my friend, Richard

"Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary." (Gal. 6:9)

Like a gentle breeze across a blistering summer day, the hand of God sometimes touches so softly that unless on watch, you'll miss it. Yesterday, I witnessed the love of Jesus fall like droplets on the tender herb.

My friend, Rachel, started coming to ladies' Bible study a couple of years ago, and her twenty-eight-year-old son, always accompanies her. Richard is autistic as well as mentally disabled and usually speaks in one or two word utterances. (I once asked him what was his favorite animal at the zoo. Richard promptly replied, "Elephants." I said, "Oh, you like the elephants?" He said, "Yes, ROLL TIDE!" He's also an avid Bama football fan.)

For two years, I've observed this young man sit quietly during our Scripture lessons and wondered how much he understood. Yesterday, Richard brought a notebook to the N. Avondale Library where we meet. He sat down at the table, smiled, and opened the black binder. Inside, a Bible was duck taped into the notebook; and with no help or prompting, he turned directly to the book of Joshua where we've been studying for the past three months. My heart soared with praise and thanksgiving to God!

Beloved, whatever work the Lord has set before you, never fear that it's in vain. Keep sowing God's seeds of love and truth, dear one, and one day He will reap a harvest!

Life's Final Test

>> Wednesday, April 29, 2015

my precious family, 1987

"Let it be known to all of you and to all the people...that by the name of Jesus Chrsist...there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:10,12)

In 1988, about two weeks before our timber company went belly up, I dreamed that the phone rang and a man's voice said, “Jill, build your faith. You’re going to need it.” So I started studying the Bible like I was preparing for finals – in a way, I guess I was preparing for life’s final test. Three very important truths that I’ve learned over the years are:

TRUTH #1 – Every person born physically is DEAD spiritually.

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Rom. 3:23)
“The wages of sin is DEATH…” (Rom. 6:23a)
“You were DEAD in your trespasses and sin.” (Eph. 2:1)
“For as in Adam all DIE…” (1 Cor. 15:22a)

TRUTH #2 – A DEAD man can’t help himself. SomeOne has to make a DEAD person ALIVE.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be BORN AGAIN to a LIVING hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the DEAD…If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed [made ALIVE] with perishable things like silver or gold…but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” (1 Peter 1:3,17-19)

“For while we were still helpless [DEAD], at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.” (Romans 5:6)

“Therefore we are buried with Jesus by baptism into DEATH; so that as Christ was raised up from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of LIFE!” (Romans 6:4)

“Let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ… there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:10,12)

TRUTH  #3 – Only those ALIVE in intimate relationship with Jesus will enter heaven – His Kingdom - where Jesus Christ is the JUDGE of the LIVING and the DEAD.

“I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His Kingdom: preach the Word…For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. (2 Tim. 4:1-4)

Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast our demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me.” (Matt. 7:21-23)

“I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting God who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we preached to you, he is accursed.” (Gal. 1:6-8)

“Now I make known to you, the gospel… that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time.” (1 Cor. 15:1,3-5)

“If you confess with your mouth, Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him, for ‘Whoever will call on the name of the Lord [Jesus] will be saved.’” (Romans 10:9-13)

Jesus isn’t one way to heaven; the Bible teaches from Genesis to Revelation that Jesus Christ truly is the ONLY way to eternal LIFE. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the LIFE; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”  Therefore, Jesus is the Son of God, the Christ, the Savior, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world OR He was a liar.

Beloved, who do you say Jesus is?

My Phillip and sweet Bell in Old Blue
1978 dump truck

"As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for You, O God. I thirst for God, the living God." (Psalm 42:1)

Sweet Bell's favorite place on this ole earth is under my superman's arm (my favorite spot as well).

In Psalm 42,  as the psalmist yearns for his LORD, he sings, "Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart sad? I will put my hope in God! my Savior and my God; because each day the LORD pours His unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing His songs, praying to God who gives me life."

Beloved, are you discouraged? Is your heart sad? Look up! Jesus covers you with His feathers. He shelters you with His wings. God's faithful promises are your armor and protection! (Psalm 91) Rest in His arms.

My five-year-old grandson posing for the storybook illustration
Fall 2014

"Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when You come into your Kingdom.'"
"And Jesus replied, 'I assure you, today  you will be with Me in paradise." (Luke 23:42-43)

When our five-year-old grandson recently attended the funeral of a dear, family friend, he had a difficult time reconciling her being with Jesus when he could clearly see a body still on earth. I think this clever epitaph explains it well:

Under this sod, beneath these trees,
Lies the pod of Solomon Pease.
Pease isn't here, only his pod.
For Pease shelled out, and went up to God.

Solomon Pease, the thief on the cross, and my grandchildren's beloved friend all went straight to God because they were in Christ Jesus.

"For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive." (1 Cor. 15:22)

Beloved, Jesus isn't one way to God; He's the only way.

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6)

Therefore, put all your trust in Jesus.

"...Believe in Me, and understand that I alone am God. There is no other God - there never has been, and there never will be. I, yes I, am the LORD, and there is no other Savior," says the LORD (Isaiah 43:10b-11)

And that's the truth, so help me God!

"Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies for then we will be at home with the Lord." (2 Cor. 5:8)

In Your Right Mind

The Phillip Glassco Family "crazy" shot
Christmas 2013

"Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bondservant..." (Phil. 2:3-5)

Yesterday, Phillip had a routine colonoscopy. He woke up from anesthesia clear-minded, alert, and ready to go. When I, on the other hand, had that dreaded test, I awoke coo-coo for cocoa puffs and asked the nurse, "Why would anybody go into this kind of business?" Hee-hee!

Throughout Scripture, God instructs His children to have a right mind - unselfish, humble, serving, and focused on Him.

Beloved, "do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable, and perfect." (Romans 12:2)

"For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace." (Romans 8:6)

"Set your mind on things above, not on the things that are on earth." (Colossians 3:2)

"And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:7)

My Ben and babygrand,
Spring, 2015

"Arise, cry aloud in the night at the beginning of the night watches; pour out your heart in the presence of the LORD; lift up your hands for the life of your little ones..." (Lamentations 2:19)

As little kids, a common meal-time prayer at our grandparents' home included the phrase "and bless this food to the nourishment of our bodies." One time, on the way home from a family gathering, my brother asked our parents why our uncle always asked God to bless the "nurses' bodies."

Parents and grandparents, two of the most powerful, LIFE changing things we can do for our children are first, bring them daily before Almighty God's throne of grace in prayer, and second, teach them to pray to the One who is able to do far more than we could ever ask or even imagine.

On more than one occasion, my adult children have told me, "Mama, if you hadn't been praying for me, I don't know what would have happened." Beloved, God avails much through our fervent prayers. Intercede now for the LIFE of your loved ones.

"To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing." ~ Martin Luther

Mr. Greenleaf and me
Webster Christian School

"Train up a child in the WAY..." (Proverbs 22:6)

Jesus answered,  "I am the WAY and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John  14:6)

My dear friend and talented artist, Dawn Copeland, and I traveled to Webster Christian Elementary yesterday to share Mr. Greenleaf's Unforgettable Summer and enjoyed a delightful visit with precious first and second graders. Dozens of little hands wanted to pet Mr. Greenleaf, the puppet.

And the moral truth of his story is:

"The Lord is God, and He made everything. The Lord is our Guide, and His name is Jesus."

In Isaiah chapter 55, God says, "The rain and snow come down from heaven and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with My Word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it." May God bless the seeds of truth sown through a little storybook and grow up mighty men and women of God who believe in Jesus and fear His holy name!

Beloved, let us "sow with a view to righteousness, reap in accordance with kindness; break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord until He comes to rain righteousness on you!" (Hosea 10:12)

"Jacob and Mr. Greenleaf"
illustration from Mr. Greenleaf's Unforgettable Summer
by my friend and talented artist, Dawn Copeland

"Let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn back to the LORD." (Lamentations 3:40)

Today begins my book reading tour for Mr. Greenleaf's Unforgettable Summer. Woo-hoo!! Yesterday, visits to two 3rd grade public school classrooms were unexpectedly cancelled. Mr. Greenleaf and Mrs. Willowkins will tell you the story:

Do you know that electrified, overjoyed, excited feeling you have when you wake up the morning of your birthday or Christmas Day or the first day of summer vacation? Well, that's precisely how Mr. Greenleaf felt one spring morning when he opened his black peepers and remembered that it was finally the day when Mrs. Willowkins would take him on his first ever elementary school visit!

The froggy stretched his slim, lime legs, hopped through the tiny crevice to the narrow ledge above Mrs. Willowkins goldfish pond, and croaked,

"My feet want to dance,
My heart wants to sing!
Today, I will hear
A school bell ring!"

Mrs. Willowkins' voice interrupted the tree-frog serenade. "Mr. Greenleaf, Mr. Greenleaf, where are you?" she called.

(Over the months of friendship, Mrs. Willowkins had become quite efficient in speaking Froggish and had learned that her Mr. Green Jeans' - as she once called him - actual given name was Jumping Jehoshaphat  Greenleaf.)

Spying the little, tree frog on the rock ledge, she said, "Oh, there you are Mr. Greenleaf. I fear, my dear, that I have some sad news to tell you."

"Oh my, sad news? Sad new you say? I so dislike sad news. Is cousin Kelly Greenleaf okay? Is she alive and well?" croaked Mr. Greenleaf.

"Yes, dear, Kelly is happily hopping and green as ever; however, our greatly anticipated school visit has regrettably reversed to disappointment. I received an email this morning saying we are not allowed to come to public school," she sadly sighed.

"Not allowed? But why? Is it my fault? Have I done something bad? Do public schools  dislike little, green tree frogs?" asked Mr. Greenleaf in concern.

"No, dear, you've done nothing wrong. Although they didn't say specifically, I suspect we've been banned because our story is Christian in nature; and tragically, Jesus is no longer welcome in most public schools."

"Oh, my, my, my, what shall we do, Mrs. Willowkins?" said Mr. Greenleaf.

Mrs. Willowkins smiled a cheery smile. "We shall pray, my little friend! Pray for the children. Pray for the teachers. Pray for the schools, and pray for our nation that God will teach us as it says in Psalm 86:11 to once again know His ways and live according to His truth. We must ask Jesus to give us undivided minds that fear the name of the Lord."

"Yes, yes, yes! You are so right, Mrs. Willowkins. God  indeed can do all things! Let's pray now!" croaked the frog.

Mr. Greenleaf closed his little, black peepers and Mrs. Willowkins bowed her head before El Shaddai, Almighty God - the One who is able to change hearts and nations.

Beloved, shall we join them?

Mountain Quail
from Mr. Greenleaf's Unforgettable Summer
illustration by my friend and talented artist, Dawn Copeland

"You know of Jesus...how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and power...And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God Judge of the living and the dead." (Acts 10:38,42)

"I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is the Judge of the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word!" (2 Tim. 4:1-2)

Daddy was an avid quail hunter. One night. he dreamed he died and appeared before the judgment seat where twelve judges sat around a large table - and the judges were twelve, giant quail! In his dream, he muttered, "Oh no. I'm in trouble now." Ha!

Scripture warns that every soul that rejects God's Son, Jesus Christ, as Savior and Lord will at death stand before Jesus, the Judge, and be sentenced to the lake of fire - the second death.

However, Scripture also reveals the Good News that every soul that believes on and knows Jesus in personal relationship will be co-heirs with Jesus, the Judge, and receive eternal life and reward.

And that's fact, not fiction.

Beloved, he who has an ear to hear, let him hear and heed today the truth of Scripture.

"Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For God knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish." (Psalm 1:5-6)

L-R my brother Rocky, me, and my brother, Mark
1957

"How wonderful, how beautiful, when brothers and sisters get along! It's like costly anointing oil flowing down head and  beard... It's like the dew on Mount Hermon flowing down the slopes of Zion." (Psalm 133:1-3 The Message)

I just got home from visiting one of my dear brothers who's currently in the hospital. We had a great visit and agreed that we are highly blessed to have been born in in United States of America during the post WWII era into (our biased opinion) the best family ever. When my brothers and I get together, we retell the same old stories over and over and over again but never tire of hearing them.

I think I've told this story before; but oh well, it's worth repeating.

On a hot summer afternoon in 1959, we'd planned to stop for snow cones on the way home from the A & P (a popular grocery back in the day); but when Mama couldn't find a parking place, she took us home. To hush my wails of disappointment, my two "sweet" brothers gave me a dime and snuck me out a bedroom window to head back to town for the snow cone stand.

After I left, they reckoned that letting a three-year-old hike down Lookout Mountain along a busy highway alone might not be a good idea after all. So they told my mother that I ran away!!! I was almost to the highway by the time she ran me down in the Ford Fairlane. I got a good spanking, and it would be years and years before they confessed to being my accomplices.

Beloved, when was the last time you told your brother or sister you loved them? Why not tell them today.

"Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do." (Psalm 1:1-3 NLT)

"The strength of our faith is in direct proportion to our level of belief that God will do exactly what He has promised... Faith rests on the pure Word of God. When we take Him at His word, our hearts are at peace."        ~ George Mueller

"The moment our glance darts from God's truth to a problem worry wiggles into our wee, little minds."            ~ Jill Glassco

"Let your delight be in the word of God, and meditate on it day and night."         ~ Dr. David Jeremiah

Then God's peace will flow like a river.

Our sweet Bell

"But me He caught - reached all the way from the sky to sea; He pulled me out of that ocean of hate, that enemy chaos, the void in which I was drowning. They hit me when I was down, but God stuck by me. He stood me up on a wide-open field; I stood there saved - surprised to be loved!" (Psalm 18:16-19 The Message paraphrase)

After our beloved Joe (another lab-mix) died eleven years ago, I  firmly said, "I'll never have another dog." A month ago when God surprised us with sweet Bell, I learned that the old adage "never say never" is true.

Last Friday, we took Bell to be "fixed," and SURPRISE! the vet found puppies - due in two weeks! (God certainly has a sense of humor.)

Beloved, the LORD even cares about an abandoned dog and led her to a loving home for her and her babies. How infinitely more  does He cares for you? Run home to His loving arms, today. He delights in you, and you'll be surprised at His great love!

Illustrations from newly released Mr. Greenleaf's Unforgettable Summer
By my friend and talented artist, Dawn Copeland

"So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless." (1 Cor. 15:58 NLT)

In storybook making, month after long month, perhaps even years,  pass between the first stroke of the pen and a place on the bookshelf. Those in-between times can be disheartening, but the finish line, my friend, is well worth the marathon.

Beloved, are you in the midst of a difficult assignment? Be strong, don't give up, work hard, and know that your efforts for the Lord are not in vain!

Mr. Greenleaf's Unforgettable Summer
5-star review by Readers' Favorite:

Mr. Greenleaf's Unforgettable Summer by Jill Glassco is an adorable story for kids that has a good concept and conveys a worthy message to young readers. Mr. Greenleaf leads a peaceful existence in a tiny cave beside Mrs. Willowkin's flower garden by the goldfish pond. His home is cozy, quiet and comfortable. The peace is destroyed when a boisterous bullfrog, Caiaphas Croaker, invades the small pond. Mr. Greenleaf's life suddenly changes and his search for a new home takes him to spiritual heights that elevate his body, soul and spirit. The journey with Mr. Greenleaf as he goes searching for a new place is exciting and interesting.

The story is adorable and educational and will introduce kids to new ideas, thoughts, concepts and creatures. The black and white sketches complement the author's words and lend clarity, movement, and life to the story as well as the characters. The spiritual undertone in the story is educational and informative for kids, and reiterates Christian beliefs and teachings. It is a good book for bedtime storytelling for parents and grandparents, and can also be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries.

Books with a moral, concept, idea, story and message are good for children when they are initially introduced to reading, as it helps make learning about new things simple and easier. It's a book worth owning in one's personal collection because of the beautiful message and the Christian beliefs it imparts to readers.

Let's Go Fishin'

Tennessee friend holding a huge crappie caught at the farm last Saturday.

"Don't be afraid," Jesus told Simon. "From now on you will be fishing for people!" (Luke 5:10)

My small group has prayed for a dear lady who, to our knowledge, never acknowledged faith in Jesus. This week, like sands through the hourglass, her time on earth ran out. Hopefully, she believed in time, but not knowing is unsettling and has rekindled an urgency to go tell the Good News of eternal life in Christ.

Beloved, let's go fishing! "We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the One who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work." (John 9:4 NLT)

The Perfect Plan

My Rebecca and Stephen, 2004

"You can make many plans, but the LORD'S purpose will prevail." (Proverbs 19:21)

When our amazing son-in-law asked for Rebecca's hand in marriage, he presented my Phillip with a ten year plan. According to "the plan", children were "supposed" to arrive between years five and seven. Nine months after the wedding, however, the newlyweds called and read the poem: "Our plans have failed, and God's have prevailed" - babygrand #1 was on the way, and by the time they celebrated their 5th anniversary, we had three babygrands!

God's plans are perfect.

God's plan of salvation:

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

God's plan for work:

"Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men.: (Col. 3:23)

God's plan for marriage:

"A man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh... Wives be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord... Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her."
(Ephesians 5:31, 22, 25)

God's plan for parenting:

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and your mother so that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth. Fathers...bring  up your children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." (Eph. 6:1-4)

God's plan for a blessed life:

"I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your children, by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days." (Deuteronomy 30:19-20)

"For I know the plans that I have for you," declares the Lord,  "plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope." (Jer. 29:11)

Beloved, whose plan are you following - your own or God's?

Our Bell

"Rejoice with me because I found my lost sheep." In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven't strayed away! (Luke 15:6-7)

If you follow this blog, you may remember the "wayfaring stranger" that appeared at the farm a couple of weeks ago. Well, as Paul Harvey would say, "The rest of the story..."

We named our visitor Bell and took her to a nearby veterinarian to see if she had an identification chip. No chip. So we had her vaccinated; and for two weeks, drove to the river cabin every evening to feed our farm guest. When a neighbor complained that Bell was also eating their pets' food, I made the painful decision to surrender her to a no-kill animal rescue center. But my superman wisely said, "Let's at least give her a chance in the kennel at home."  Because she'd had a conniption every time we'd kenneled her at the farm and escaped within five minutes, I thought, it'll never work, but said, "Okay."

On Saturday night at our house, for an hour and a half, Bell barked and barked and barked and barked in the strange confinement of a cage in our basement. Phillip, then, took her for a long walk and prayed, "Lord, what should I do?" Immediately, an idea popped in his mind: cover the cage with a blanket. He did, and Bell slept peacefully through the night. The next day, we moved her to a spacious, outdoor kennel under our deck; and she has not barked once in five days! Our wayfaring stranger is now officially Bell Glassco - beloved pet of Phillip and Jill. Every trip to the farm, Bell goes with us and runs happily through the fields and hunts the woods. A puppy was lost, but now she's found.

In Luke chapter 15, Jesus told three parables of a lost sheep, a lost coin, and a lost son. In beautiful, word-picture stories, the Lord painted a portrait of Father God's great love and pursuit of those who are far from Him.

Beloved, are you lost? Jesus is chasing after you with His goodness and mercy. He'll follow you all the days of your life. Turn around today and be found!

There's No One Like You

My superman and 9-year-old grandson
Christmas 2014

"LORD, there is no one like You! For You are great, and Your name is full of power. Who would not fear You, O King of the nations? That title belongs to You alone! Among all the wise people of the earth and in all the kingdoms of the world, there is no one like You." (Jeremiah 10:6-7)

Our oldest grandson was given this school assignment: from the 7 billion people on our planet, choose the one you admire the most and write a paper about that person (quite a disconcerting task for a young man who does NOT like to choose favorites).

After painstaking deliberation, he narrowed 7 billion to friends and family, friends and family to family, family to grandparents, grandparents to grandfathers; and finally grandfathers to...

Granddaddy:

"A special person I admire is Phillip Larry Glassco. I call him granddaddy. He was born in 1955, and he will turn sixty on Saturday. Granddaddy, who is a forester, lives in Alabama. He has a lot of land, and I like to hear him talk about it. Granddaddy is active for his age. He is also healthy, because he exercises two hours a day. Until it's dinnertime, we play games like checkers and X-box 360. I like to play with him at his house. I also like to go fishing in his backyard, and one time I caught sixteen fish! Additionally, I like to swim with him in his pool. Granddaddy makes really cool things, and one time he made a couch out of a log. Granddaddy is a really good grandfather."

More than the love and admiration of a young boy for his grandfather, O LORD, is our great love for You! Great is Your name and greatly to be praised. You are the One true God, and besides You there is no Savior. You are gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and great in lovingkindness. You pardon all iniquities, heal all diseases, redeem from the pit, and crown with compassion whosoever believes on You. You alone are God, and we are Your people, the sheep of Your pasture. Let everything that has breath praise You, LORD!

Birthday bench top

"God has given each of you a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another." (1 Peter 4:10)

My superman's birthday was Saturday and mine is today; so our delightful, wonderful, extremely marvelous kids used their various abilities to create this gorgeous bench as a gift for us. Mrs. Creativity (our Rebecca) came up with the idea, Mr. Artistic (our Ben) designed and fashioned it,  and Mr. Muscles (our Dan) sanded and sanded and sanded the huge log from our river land. Each one played an important part in a job well done.

Everyday, let us exercise our individual abilities together and serve others as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

My grands

"He Himself bore our sins on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed." (1 Peter 2:24)

Yesterday, I asked my Rebecca to snap this picture of our older grands' interpretation of "Hallelujah," which means God be praised. Today is Good Friday - the anniversary of the day Jesus suffered and died in our place. Let us joyfully shout to the Lord, all the earth, and sing praises to His holy name because...

"...having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ... For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly... For as through [Adam's] disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of [Jesus] the many will be made righteous (Romans 5:1,6,19)... Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life... For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:4,23)."

"Religion says shame on you; relationship [with Jesus] says shame off you."  ~ John Gray

He is risen!

He is risen indeed!

Believe!

And you are set free!

My grands kite flying
(I LOVE this picture and the little ones in it!)

"Haven't I commanded you: be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9 HCSB)

Yesterday, out of the cornflower-blue, spring skies, I was ambushed. That crafty ole foe, discouragement, waylaid me; and as we wrestled, I cried, "Lord, let me hear Your voice!"

Faithful God answered in today's devotion from -

Streams in the Desert
by L. B. Cowman

"They looked...and there was the glory of the LORD appearing in the cloud." (Exodus 16:10)

...Do not yield to discouragement no matter how severely stressed or surrounded by problems you may be. A discouraged soul is in a helpless state, being unable to "stand against the devil's schemes'"(Eph. 6:11)... Flee every symptom of the deadly foe of discouragement as you would run from a snake. Never be slow to turn your back on it, unless you desire to eat the dust of bitter defeat...

Pour out your heart to God, asking Him to rebuke the adversary who is so mercilessly harassing you. The very instant you wholeheartedly turn away from every symptom of discouragement and lack of trust, the blessed Holy Spirit will reawaken your faith and breathe God's divine strength into your soul...

Determine to  uncompromisingly shun every attack of even the tendency toward doubt and depression; you will quickly see the powers of darkness being turned back... All the miraculous attributes of the Godhead are marshaled on the side of even the weakest believer who, in the name of Christ and in simple, childlike trust, yields himself to God and turns to Him for help and guidance...

Never lose... the skyward look... keep faith... keep hope... keep courage... and keep Christ... Keep your skyward look, my soul; keep your skyward look!"
