Maud Lindsay Free Kindergarten
(1898 - present)

"For the wages of sin is death, but the FREE gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord."
(Romans 6:23 NLT)

In economics, it's taught that "there is no such thing as a free lunch" meaning that it's impossible to get something for nothing. I say, "Economics got it wrong."

Author-teacher Maud Lindsay (1874-1941) was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama and was a childhood friend of Helen Keller. In 1898, she established the state's first FREE kindergarten on Cole Avenue in the cotton-mill district of East Florence and taught there for 42 years. My mother was one of her students in the 1920s, and the school is still in operation today. Over the decades, thousands of children have received much for nothing.

(Miss Maud's classic children's books, Mother Stories, is a valued treasure in my library. A "motto" precedes each story offering a life lesson for mothers to teach their children.)

Scripture teaches that God offers a FREE gift - forgiveness of sins and eternal life - to whosoever will believe. No one deserves it, and no one can earn it. God's gift is received only by faith.

"God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a [FREE] gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it." (Ephesians 2:8-9 NLT)

"So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a FREE gift."
(Romans 4:16 NLT)

Believers got something inconceivably great for FREE. It cost us nothing, but it cost Jesus everything. Hmmmm...maybe economists are right after all.
