The Trick-or-treat Dilemma

Our little "Alfalfa"

"Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God." (Heb. 3:12)

After walking their neighborhood with our costumed grandkids last night, I awoke at 2:00 a.m. feeling a bit like Mr. Greenleaf...

(The froggy thought and deliberated and pondered and considered and thought and thought once more until his little, green head began to hurt. Mr. Greenleaf whined, "This way or that way, that way or this? If that is the right way, is this way a miss?")

...in regards to the ongoing debate: Should followers of Jesus Christ participate in Halloween activities?

We stopped giving out candy when our kids were middle schoolers, but continued to enjoy fall festivals at church. Currently, two of our grown children's children trick or treat and trunk or treat and one family doesn't. As for Phillip and me, we don't give out candy, but we often go with our kids and grands wherever they are.

So what's the answer to the trick-or-treat dilemma? Whatever your family decides, honor Jesus and be careful that your hearts stay close to God and far away from evil. Amen?
